Sugar Ray Robinson

Born Walker Smith Jr. in 1921, Sugar Ray Robinson grew up in Detroit and New York’s Harlem, where his boxing journey began. Celebrated for his fluid footwork, hand speed, combination punching and power in either hand, he became a benchmark for boxing’s “pound-for-pound” greatness.

Robinson won the world welterweight championship in 1946 and went on to win the world middleweight title five times. His celebrated rivalry with Jake LaMotta and memorable contests against opponents including Carmen Basilio and Gene Fullmer helped define a remarkable era of boxing. He died in 1989, leaving an enduring sporting legacy.

Part of our Boxing Legends range, this collection celebrates Sugar Ray Robinson’s career, championship achievements and lasting influence on the sport.
