Vesak
Vesak is a sacred Buddhist observance that, in many traditions, commemorates the birth, enlightenment and passing into parinirvana of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha. Buddhism originated in South Asia, and Vesak is observed in countries including Sri Lanka, Nepal and much of Southeast Asia, as well as by Buddhist communities worldwide, including the UK. Dates, names and customs vary between countries and Buddhist traditions; some commemorate these events separately.
When it happens: commonly around a full moon in April or May, although some countries observe it in June. The exact Gregorian calendar date changes each year and depends on the calendar and tradition followed by the community.
Observances may include temple visits, meditation, offerings of flowers and lights, acts of generosity and renewed commitment to compassion and ethical living. For many people, Vesak is a time for quiet reflection and service to others.
