Guru Nanak Gurpurab
Guru Nanak Gurpurab celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He was born in 1469 at a place now known as Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan. The occasion is observed by Sikh communities in Punjab and worldwide, including the UK, honouring teachings of equality, honest living, sharing and devotion to one God.
When it happens: commonly October or November, on the full moon of the lunar month of Kartik. The exact Gregorian calendar date changes each year, and calendar practices can differ between communities.
Observances may include readings of the Guru Granth Sahib, devotional singing called kirtan, community processions called nagar kirtan and langar, the free community meal open to everyone. Seva, selfless service, and acts of generosity are central expressions of the occasion.
