Songkran

Songkran is Thailand’s traditional New Year celebration, observed in Thailand and by Thai communities worldwide, including the UK. With roots in the traditional solar calendar and strong connections to Buddhist practice, it is a time for renewal, family reunions, generosity and respect for elders.

When it happens: traditionally 13–15 April each year, although local celebrations and public events may extend beyond these dates.

Water symbolises cleansing and fresh beginnings. Alongside lively public water festivities, many families visit temples, make offerings and gently pour water over elders’ hands to express respect and receive blessings. The respectful bathing of Buddha images is also part of many observances. Customs vary between regions and families.
