Passover / Pesach

Passover, also called Pesach, is a Jewish festival commemorating the Exodus, the biblical account of the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt. Rooted in ancient Jewish traditions, it is observed by Jewish communities worldwide, including the UK, and centres on freedom, remembrance and passing the story between generations.

When it happens: usually March or April, beginning at sunset on the eve of the fifteenth day of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar. It lasts seven days in Israel and in many Reform communities, and eight days in many communities outside Israel. The exact Gregorian calendar dates change each year.

The Seder is a ritual meal at which the Exodus story is retold using the Haggadah, symbolic foods, questions and songs. Matzah, unleavened bread, is a central part of the festival. Dietary observance and family customs vary, and food gifts should meet the recipient’s specific kosher-for-Passover requirements.
