Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse brought a remarkable blend of jazz, soul and rhythm and blues to modern British music. Her rich, expressive voice and sharply observed songwriting could be witty, vulnerable and fiercely honest, giving her songs a character that was entirely her own.
Born on 14 September 1983 in London, Amy grew up surrounded by musical influences and developed a deep love of jazz. Her debut album, Frank, released in 2003, introduced her distinctive phrasing and lyrical individuality. Its follow-up, Back to Black, arrived in 2006, blending the atmosphere of 1960s soul and girl-group records with deeply personal contemporary songwriting.
Songs including Rehab, You Know I’m No Good, Back to Black and Love Is a Losing Game brought her international recognition. In 2008 she won five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Rehab, and Best New Artist. Her beehive hairstyle, winged eyeliner and close connection with Camden also became part of her instantly recognisable image.
Amy died on 23 July 2011, aged 27. Her lasting legacy rests in the artistry of her recordings, her emotional honesty and the generations of listeners and singers she continues to inspire. This collection remembers Amy through her music, individuality and extraordinary talent.
