Before the wedding

Families prepare with their gurdwara. Some also hold Punjabi cultural celebrations, such as mehndi or music evenings, which are distinct from the religious marriage ceremony.

The ceremony and traditional rituals

The Anand Karaj takes place in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib. Four wedding hymns, the Laavan, accompany four rounds made by the couple around the scripture.

Celebrating afterwards

A communal meal, langar, may be followed by a separate reception.

Traditional clothing and contemporary choices

Bridal clothing may include a salwar kameez or lehenga with a dupatta covering the head. Grooms may wear a sherwani and turban. Guests should follow the gurdwara’s guidance on head coverings and respectful clothing.

Music and dancing

The Anand Karaj centres on the singing of the Laavan and devotional music. Punjabi music and bhangra may feature at a separate reception rather than during the sacred ceremony.

How long do the celebrations last?

The religious ceremony is often around 45 minutes. A fuller family programme can extend over three to five days, but many couples choose a shorter celebration.
