Before the wedding

Some families hold a parental blessing at home before leaving for the ceremony. Traditions vary between regions, generations and individual households.

The ceremony and traditional rituals

Many couples choose a Catholic church wedding; others have a civil or different religious ceremony. The marriage ceremony is called the ślub, while the wedding celebration is the wesele.

Celebrating afterwards

A bread-and-salt welcome may greet the newlyweds at the reception, followed by food, music and dancing. Some families hold poprawiny, a more relaxed gathering the following day.

Traditional clothing and contemporary choices

Live bands, Polish favourites and contemporary dance music can feature at the reception. Ask the family which folk or regional songs they would like included.

How long do the celebrations last?

A wesele can continue into the early morning. Some families also hold poprawiny the following day. Ceremony length depends on the religious or civil service chosen.
