Orthodox Celebrations: Weddings, Christmas & Easter
A welcoming home for Orthodox Christian wedding, Christmas and Easter gift inspiration. Practices vary by church, region, community and family.
Christmas & Easter
Christmas and Easter are central Christian celebrations, marking the birth and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Orthodox Christian traditions have roots in the early Church of the eastern Mediterranean and are observed by communities across countries including Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and Georgia, as well as worldwide, including the UK. Church calendars and local customs differ.
Christmas observances may include fasting beforehand, church services and family meals. Easter celebrations often include Holy Week worship, midnight services, decorated eggs and festive gatherings. Foods, greetings and customs vary between churches, countries and families.
Coming soon: thoughtful gifts, keepsakes and decorative pieces for Christmas wishes, Easter gatherings and meaningful family celebrations, chosen with respect for each family's faith and traditions.
Orthodox Christian weddings
Explore orthodox christian wedding traditions, with a welcoming introduction to preparations, ceremony customs and celebrations afterwards. Practices vary by region, community, denomination and family, and couples may blend traditions.
Before the wedding
The couple meet their priest for marriage preparation and arrange ceremony items, which can include rings, candles and wedding crowns. Local church traditions vary.
The ceremony and traditional rituals
The service includes the blessing of rings and the crowning of the couple. Prayers and a shared cup also feature. In Greek practice, the crowns are often joined by a ribbon.
Celebrating afterwards
A reception may bring together family meals, music, dancing and regional customs.
This collection is a home for wedding inspiration as the range develops. Customs described are examples, not a checklist or guidance on legal marriage requirements. Ceremony services, venue reservations and event bookings are not currently offered.
Traditional clothing and contemporary choices
Formal wedding clothing should respect the church setting. A wedding gown and suit are common choices, while regional dress and head-covering customs vary. Ask the parish about its expectations.
Music and dancing
Ask the priest or parish musicians about the appropriate liturgical singing for the service. Reception music is a separate choice and may reflect the couple’s regional heritage.
How long do the celebrations last?
The Betrothal and Crowning commonly take around 45–60 minutes. A service combined with a longer liturgy takes more time, and the reception has its own schedule.
Timings are approximate examples, not requirements. Always follow the couple’s invitation, the officiant’s guidance and the venue’s schedule.
