Before the wedding

A ketubah, a Jewish marriage document, is prepared and signed according to the couple’s tradition. Some communities also include a veiling ceremony.

The ceremony and traditional rituals

The couple marry beneath a chuppah, a canopy representing their shared home. Blessings over wine, a ring ritual and seven blessings commonly feature. A glass is often broken at the end.

Celebrating afterwards

A festive meal, music and dancing bring family and friends together.

Traditional clothing and contemporary choices

Traditional melodies and hora dancing may be part of the celebration alongside contemporary music. Practices and arrangements differ by community and family.

How long do the celebrations last?

A ceremony may take roughly 30–45 minutes, followed by a reception lasting several hours. Some families also observe a week of sheva brachot celebrations; these are separate gatherings rather than one continuous wedding.
